During the last decades people were dreaming of a device that will launch their consciousness to a synthetic and escapist world. Film makers and directors based their movies on that. During the 80’s and 90s’ many companies spent millions on trying to make it, but the technology wasn’t there. Few primitive devices like the “Virtual Boy” by NINTENDO were released but failed completely commercially. And in the beginning of the 2000s’ the vision of virtual reality was buried behind the high expectations.
And then, in 2011 a 18 years old kid named Luckey Palmer surprised the world. During a 3 years period, from the garage of his parents’ home in California, he studied carefully virtual reality devices, mainly devices that were developed by the US army as simulators which he bought in E-BAY, with the money he earned and saved by fixing I PHONES. He took these devices and disassembled and re-assembled adding components from different sources. In the end of the process he created the prototype of the new virtual reality device, which will be the prototype for the Oculus Rift. The most significant fact was that it was estimated to cost under 300$, making it commercially feasible.
Palmer not a very sharp business man, published about his advances in a computer 3D game forum. He had the luck that no one stealth his idea, but it draw the attention of another forum member named John D. Carmack a legendary game programmer. Carmack asked Palmer to give him a try with his new device, and few days later got it by mail. The experience Carmack had blew his head, and he decided to show it in the next gaming congress. Very soon the device became the “talk of the day” in the gaming community – and from there the way to a “kick starter” campaign was short. The kick starter campaign succeeded beyond expectations raising 2.4 Million dollars almost 10 times more than their goal. It was not long till the rumor spread and last year Facebook founder Mark Zukerberg bought Oculus VR paying more than 2 Milliard dollars.
After the purchase Zukerberg declared that the Oculus Rift is not just another gaming gadget but a new platform for communication that stands in the same line with the phone and the TV inventions

Those glasses are capable to completely immerse you in different reality. And even if it’s clear for you that it’s completely artificial, your mind interpret it as real – the power not going anywhere and being everywhere. In the end of the session when I lift the glasses, a bit sweaty, I felt as if I just got out of an amazing VR porn trip. I understood that the porn experience I knew before will never be the same and that it will be very hard to go back. The virtual reality is not a science fiction fantasy anymore it’s a REALITY, and a very cool reality.
The Rift is an open code device and aside of thousands computer games available Rift it is possible already to find many sites with pornographic content, all of them from private programmers that are willing to take us to the 31 century porn and nothing going to stop them. I think that the answer for the well-known question “ what will be the one thing you take with you to a lonely island” is easier today – I would definitely answer – a pair of Oculus Rift and a subscription to good VR PORN movie site.
